Google Ads vs Meta Ads: which is better for your small business?
How the two biggest ad platforms differ, which one fits your business, and how to use them together.

Google Ads and Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) are the two platforms most small businesses start with. Both can bring in customers, but they work in very different ways. Choosing the right one first can save you a lot of wasted budget.
Google Ads show your ad when someone is actively searching for what you sell, for example "emergency plumber near me" or "custom t-shirt printing". The person already has a need, so these clicks are often closer to a purchase.
Meta Ads show your ad to people based on who they are and what they're interested in, while they scroll Facebook and Instagram. They weren't searching for you, so Meta is strongest at creating demand: showing people a product or offer they didn't know they wanted.
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| How people find you | They search for it | They see it in their feed |
| Best for | Services with existing demand, local businesses, urgent needs | Visual products, new offers, eCommerce, brand awareness |
| Targeting | Keywords, location, device, schedule | Interests, demographics, lookalike audiences, retargeting |
| Creative | Mostly text; images and video in some campaign types | Images, video and Reels are essential |
| Typical cost | Higher cost per click in competitive industries | Often cheaper per click, but more clicks are needed per sale |
Many businesses use Google Ads to capture people who are already searching and Meta Ads to build awareness and bring visitors back. A common pattern is: someone discovers you on Instagram, later searches your name or service on Google, and converts there. If you only measure each platform separately, you can miss how they help each other.
There is no single right number. Start with a budget you can sustain for at least two to three months, because both platforms need time and data to optimize. Spread a small budget too thin across many campaigns and none of them will learn. It's better to run one well-targeted campaign properly than five half-funded ones.
Without tracking you're guessing. With it, you can move budget to whatever is actually bringing in customers.
Meta Ads often have a lower cost per click, while Google Ads clicks can cost more but come from people who are actively searching. The number that matters is cost per customer, which depends on your business and how well campaigns are set up.
You can get clicks on day one, but campaigns usually need a few weeks of data to optimize. Judge results over two to three months, not a few days.
Yes, both platforms let you. Many businesses hire help because poor targeting and tracking can waste budget quickly.
